Without a doubt, I owe my life's work with animals to my mom (Thanks mom!)... Growing up in a Bel Air mansion full of dogs and cats, and hamsters and rats, and the occasional wild rescue, my mother instilled in me a great appreciation for all creatures, and the will to be responsible for them.

While I've dedicated much of my life to helping wildlife, my profession as a caregiver to dogs has supported me through these many years.

It all started after graduating high school at age 16. I wanted to be financially independent of my family. With luck, an ad for a dog bather led me to Hilda Pemberton. She started me on my dog grooming career, oh so many years ago.

At age 25, my grandfather helped me purchase a van for mobile dog grooming. Being one of the first mobile units in the area, my business thrived. By 1988 I was grooming exclusively in my hometown of Malibu.

In the early nineties my life changed... I changed. I wanted to do more to help wild animals. I began volunteering with International Bird Rescue Research Center and was soon recruited on to their oil spill response team. For quite some time, washing dogs supported my philanthropy.

In 1996 I founded The California Wildlife Center. After managing its wildlife hospital for 4 years, I organized WildRescue to focus on emergency response to wildlife casualties.

By 2007, having been married to the man of my dreams for two years, and having launched a state-of-the-art wildlife hotline, written a script about my late friend Timothy Treadwell, and cursed the urban sprawl one too many times - it was time to relocate.

After many trips up and down the coast, both Duane and I were drawn toward the Carmel Valley area. It felt like Malibu used to. With two horses, a dog, two cats, and a chicken, we settled into our new community on October 3rd.

Duane has launched his new business - Acorn Electric - bringing his experience as an electrical contractor to the area, and Carmel Canines has received it's first call!
